I was responsible for...
My responsibilities are to promote local foods to people in Northwest Iowa. I am working with 2 other interns as well and we take tours of different gardens to learn how they grow and sell their products. We are doing a Fun With Food Tasting at local farmers' markets where we make a fresh recipe using produce purchased fresh that morning and give away samples. We have office work that is completed in the extension and outreach building. Lastly,I have an individual project that contains working with WIC Clinics in 6 counties. I make a fresh salad and serve samples to families and children while they wait. They can also get a copy of the recipe in English or Spanish and a list of the farmers' markets that accept WIC checks for produce.
Working with a variety of people young and old. Planning activities for children and family.
I will never forget...
My most memorable experience is doing the Fun with Food Tastings at farmers' markets because we get to make a fresh recipe, support local producers, and see how happy people are to try something new. It is fun talking with them and describing our internship. We are also in the local newspapers a lot promoting where we will be that week!
Advice for others...
My advice would be that the Rising Star Internship is a great experience for students who want to work with people and do something different than most HDFS internships. This internship is great for students who have an interest in nutrition as well. ( it is also a paid internship! :) )
I first learned about this career-building experience from...
Lisa Enloe gave me the website link to the application and youtube video of what students did last summer.
I landed this assignment by...
I filled out the application, talked to them personally at the career fair, and did an interview.
I wanted this experience because...
I want to work with ISU Extension and Outreach after I graduate as a Family Life Coordinator or a Nutritional Science Health and Wellness Field Specialist.
