College of Health and Human Sciences graduate students receive awards at GPSS Research Conference

Three College of Health and Human Sciences graduate students were among those receiving first place awards at Iowa State University’s 8th annual Graduate and Professional Student Senate Research Conference, on April 9. Awardees received a cash prize scholarship in addition to their first place status.

Amber Baughman, master’s student in food science and human nutrition, explained her research in an oral presentation titled, “Comparing the Effectiveness of a SNAP simulation Given to Dietetics Students in the Classroom versus on the Computer”. Baughman’s presentation included giving dietetics students a computer simulation that placed them in the shoes of a family experiencing food insecurity.

Chih-Chun Kuo, master’s student in food science and human nutrition, demonstrated her research through a poster presentation titled, “Semi-solid Extrusion-based 3D Printing of Biopolymer Hydrogels for Food Application”. Kuo worked with Dr. Xiaolei Shi, adjunct assistant professor in food science and human nutrition, and Dr. Stephanie Clark, professor in food science and human nutrition.

Rotem Arieli, doctoral student in human development and family studies, focused on unique health-specific personality traits of older adults in a poster presentation titled, “Examining Physical and Emotional Health of Older Adults by Health-Specific Personality Traits and Demographics”. Arieli’s presentation was co-authored by Dr. Peter Martin, professor in human development and family studies.
