My responsibilities included prepping and making the different ice cream flavors and ice cream sandwiches needed for the shop, the truck, and large orders or big events. Another main responsibility of this internship is to brainstorm and develop new ice cream flavors that will sell well in the shop and in the ice cream truck.

I was able to accomplish quite a bit in my short time working at The Outside Scoop. While working there, I was able to help in developing many new ice cream flavors. Some of the flavors we developed include goat cheese and roasted cherry, boozy butter pecan, roasted apricot, lemonhead custard, beer, and my personal favorite earl gray tea. I also implemented a new production method that made things easier and more efficient. It is a very satisfying feeling to know that I made changes that will be used for years after I am gone.

Learning experience

This internship was filled with valuable experiences. I learned a tremendous amount about the processes required for flavor development. I also learned about the science behind making ice cream, and how to experiment with different flavor combinations. Creating new ice cream flavors is extremely fun, and I loved learning about all the aspects of product development.

What advice would you give?

This work environment can get quite hectic at times. The staff moves at a quick pace, so I would recommend this internship to a person who handles stress well. You can sometimes be expected to work long hours during special events, so it is important that you have a flexible schedule. It is also essential that you be self-motivated to get your work done in a timely and efficient manner.
