I was responsible for...
The responsibilities I undertake at Mercy as a Communications Operator mainly involve communicating efficiently and effectively with patients and staff on a daily basis. I'm trained to guide patients through their choices of food based on a specific diet they have been assigned by a dietitian or other health care professional. After processing an order, I send it to the assembly line in the kitchen where food service staff prepare it. Since I work in the Dietary Department, it is also my duty to modify diet orders if staff experience difficulty doing so. When not on the phones, I also gather tube feedings and prepare baby formulas. After I sort these orders, I am the one who places it on the carts that go up to different floors of the hospital.
I will never forget...
The most memorable thing I experience is when a patient or staff member says thank you. Often times, I will cope with unsatisfied people that don't understand or are unaware of the diet order of a patient. It is very rewarding to me however, when I can clearly explain the situation and prepare a meal for a patient that they prefer. I always try to be personable and it really makes my day if I can get a laugh out of someone to brighten them up :)
Advice for others...
For anyone wanting to get a good experience to see what happens in clinical dietetics, this job couldn't be better! When taking on this job I strongly urge you to get involved. You can always ask to take on more responsibilities and shadow dietitians to see what goes on in this setting first hand. Why not take advantage of that?!
