Graduate Programs

From researching the nutritional relationships in cancer, diabetes, and obesity to producing new food products full of flavor, you can find a graduate program that fits your interests.

Our faculty serve in national and international professional societies and collaborate with centers on the Iowa State campus and universities throughout the world, which will provide you with numerous research and networking opportunities.


Priority of department scholarships and research assistantships will be given to applications received by December 1 for fall semester. Department scholarships and research assistantships are based on: 1) approval into Food Science and/or Nutritional Science; 2) faculty acceptance into laboratory; and 3) availability of funding.

Scholarships are also available on a competitive basis from FSHN, the Colleges of Agriculture and Life Sciences and Human Sciences, and other sources. Learn more about scholarships.

The following materials will be used by the potential major professor to determine whether or not a candidate will be offered an assistantship:

  • Letters of recommendation
  • Statement of purpose
  • Statement of interest in specific signature area on supplemental form
