Master of Professional Practice in Dietetics

The Professional Practice in Dietetics (MPP-D) program is a non-thesis master’s degree for individuals that have successfully completed the Iowa State University Dietetic Internship (ISU DI). This online program will help registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) professionals build a stronger foundation to move their practice forward regardless of employment location. This graduate program in professional practice provides the practicing RDN with opportunities to acquire advanced knowledge and experiential learning in:

  • Medical nutrition therapy including integrative and functional medicine, pediatrics, and nutrition-focused physical exam
  • Metabolism and chronic disease
  • Evidence-informed practice
  • Grant writing
  • Leadership strategies
  • Healthcare and policy
  • Enhancing interprofessional communication skills

The 30-credit, non-thesis program applies the credits earned in the ISU DI with additional credits of online coursework. Students completing approximately 4-5 credits per semester can finish the program in one year. Ten credits are required core courses with an additional 5-6 credits chosen based on professional interest and career path.

Due to changes in the accreditation process to become an RDN, the stand-alone online master’s program at Iowa State University will end August 2021.  Therefore, the last cohort will begin in Fall 2020.  Students must be able to complete the curriculum by August 2021.
